A survey of NSW businesses shows employment conditions have turned positive, with more employers hiring new employees.

The latest Business Conditions Survey undertaken by NSW Business Chamber shows that across every measure, businesses are more confident about sales, business conditions, exports, profits and employment.

20% report increase

The survey showed 20% of businesses reporting an increase in employee numbers (up 5%), compared to 15% reporting a decrease in employees (down 12%).

‘This is good news for NSW and given than NSW makes up one-third of the national economy, it is good news for Australia,’ said Stephen Cartwright, CEO of NSW Business Chamber.

‘NSW businesses end 2009 much more positive, confident and optimistic than they were at the start of 2009. Australia has proved itself to be a more resilient, flexible and sound economy than was originally expected.’

Weathered the storm

‘NSW businesses have weathered the storm and with the exception of issues relating to interest rates and access to credit, are more confident about 2010. I know there is a tendency for commentators to talk down NSW, but this survey indicates that NSW businesses are increasingly optimistic about 2010.’

The NSW Business Conditions Survey found:
  • 36% of businesses reported that the current performance of the NSW economy was stronger than the previous quarter (this was up 22 percentage points over previous survey)
  • 31% of businesses say business conditions have improved over the past quarter (up 9 percentage points) and 40% of businesses expect business conditions to improve in the coming quarter (up 11 percentage points)
  • 42% of business report increased sales revenue (up 14%) and 51% expect sales revenue to increase in the coming quarter (up 15%)
  • 32% of businesses report an improvement in profitability (up 10%) and 44% expect profits to improve in the coming quarter (up 12%)
  • Businesses employment conditions have finally turned positive with 20% of businesses reporting an increase in employee numbers (up 5%) compared to 15% reporting a decrease in employees (down 12%).
