About Apprenticeships and Traineeships
Australian Apprenticeships let you combine paid work and training in an occupation of your choice and are designed specifically for each industry. In fact, there are qualifications available in more than 80% of occupations – that’s over 500 choices. With an Australian Apprenticeship you spend most of your time in paid employment, learning practical skills on-the-job.
You may also spend some of your time in structured training in the workplace, at a TAFE or another Registered Training Organisation (RTO). This means you can work and study in the same field, get paid while you’re training and complete this training within your standard working week.
An Australian Apprenticeship is a fantastic basis on which to build your career, earning you a nationally recognised qualification. Upon completion, you can also use your certificate as credit towards a higher level qualification such as a Diploma or Degree, or even to start your own business.
An apprenticeship is a four-year entry-level training and employment program for people wanting a qualification in a particular occupation or industry.
A traineeship is usually a one to four-year training and employment program for people wanting to establish a career in a particular occupation or industry.

If you are still at school, many options are available
Senior high school students can start some apprenticeships or complete a traineeship while at school. As a school-based apprentice/trainee, you’ll be paid while being trained — and both your on-the-job and off-the-job training can contribute to your HSC. What’s more, since you’ll already have a job and started your training, you’ll be qualified quicker.
School-based apprentices work part-time and start the first stage of their structured training while at school. School-based trainees work part-time and complete their formal training by the end of their HSC year.
