New Talent at Information Resource Development Pty Ltd
The lead generation company Information Resource Development (IRD) had been without a junior office assistant for five months.
Lisa Morris, accounts and office manager, decided that without the budget for an experienced office administrator, a business administration trainee was the way to go – but she didn’t want to waste time with a long and drawn out recruitment process.
Lisa called on Australian Business Talent who successfully placed seventeen year old Charlotte Labrum, affectionately now known in the workplace as ‘Charlie’.
Recruitment took only three weeks, from writing the job specification to deciding on the right candidate. An Australian Business Talent representative, first visited IRD in St Leonards to develop an accurate job specification. Australian Business Talent culled the applicants, selected the shortlist and conducted basic literacy and numeracy tests.
While Lisa set some of her own scenario tests, she was so impressed by Charlotte at the first interview she’d really already made her decision!
Lisa said that her dealings with Australian Business Talent were very positive. ‘While I decided to employ Charlotte, all the candidates they referred had really good qualities. And Australian Business Talent made it easier by highlighting applicants’ existing skills and experience.’
She first found out about Australian Business Talent from an Australian Business Limited Apprenticeships Centre (ABL Apprenticeships Centre) consultant. ABL Apprenticeships Centre looks after the paperwork, signup and incentives for traineeships and apprenticeships.
Cut recruitment costs
IRD saved money because Australian Business Talent charges a low flat fee. They could also access Australian government incentives to offset recruitment costs — the training and assessment was largely paid for. And IRD will be eligible for a payroll tax rebate (in accordance with the NSW rules for new starter trainees).
As for Charlotte, her career goal is to become a well-paid Personal Assistant for a CEO – just like her mother. Clearly well-liked by the young team at IRD, she is currently responsible for office supplies, basic research and pricing – and well on her way to greater things. IRD’s Sales Manager/Director, Brett Venables said: ‘we like to think Charlie will progress within the company and beyond it.’
Money well spent finding the right talent
“We attempted to employ an apprentice Refrigeration Technician every year and struggled to find candidates to interview,” said Carolyn Brooks from Access Air Conditioning Pty Ltd.
It’s a common utterance for many small business owners keen to expand operations but struggling to fill the employment gaps in their business.
Ms Brooks has resorted to local recruitment agencies, word of mouth, trade billboards and advertising in the local paper.
“This has always been a long arduous process and usually with a limited choice of applications to choose from,” she said.
This year, the company had two roles to fill - Junior Administration and Refrigeration technician. For Ms Brooks the process of sourcing and interviewing was over whelming.
“As we are members of an Australian Business Limited Apprenticeships Centre, I contacted them and they then in turn put me in contact with Australian Business Talent.”
AB Talent is a complete recruitment service with a price based on a flat fee per placement. The service is, on average, 40 percent more economical than most traditional recruiters.
“AB Talent’s Aaron Jaager visited us to find out exactly what we were looking for in a candidate,” said Ms Brooks. “He then came back to us with a selection of applications he had short listed to suit our needs.”
According to Ms Brooks, no other agent had ever presented them with a choice of candidates so the job of selecting the right person was much easier.
“What also impressed me was the selection of applicants. They turned up punctually with a professional resume and presented smartly.
“Whether Australian Business Talent assisted or coached candidates to present themselves well, I’m unsure, but it assisted our company in focusing on what we needed in an employee.”
To Ms Brooks, it’s money well spent. “We’ve saved time and now have two productive, young people growing within our company.”
